Hockey, Figure-Skating School in Dunn Arena
A mid-summer hockey and figure-skating school will be held at the Sir James Arena during the week of August 12-17 inclusive. The school, which will provide an athletic leadership course for some 60 boys and 35 girls from this province is sponsored by Honorable W. R. Diffue's youth and welfare department of New Brunswick. Sports coordinator Roly McLenahan and John Murrant, executive secretary to the minister of youth and welfare will be the directors of the week-long school.
The boys and girls, who will attend the school will be chosen from the five athletic divisions of the province by responsible committees of directors who are closely associated with the sports division of the youth and welfare department. Boys who have hockey potential and girls with figure skating ability in the 16–18-year age group who can become leaders in sports in their respective communities are the desirable types looked for in this six-day training program.
Doug Harvey and Jacques Plante of the National Hockey League, former Montreal Canadian stars and now with the New York Rangers are two of the school's coaches already named. The name of the figure skating instructress will be released shortly.
The training schedule will consist of actual ice time as well as classroom lectures and instructional films for both hockey players and figure skates. The two groups will alternate for ice time during morning, afternoon and evening sessions. The daytime periods will be closed to the public.
Hockey double headers on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings will be open to the public and there will be a nominal admission charge for the games Saturday evening will feature an all-star game of hockey and a figure skating exhibition to wind up the school's closing. This will also be open to the public.
