St. Andrews Was Commercial Centre 100 Years Ago.

While on an extended vacation in Europe, Herbert J. Holland, recently had good reason to feel pride in his adopted hometown, St. Andrews. On a quick swing through the better-known financial districts of Europe, Mr. Holland had occasion to pay a visit to the Bourse, which is the Brussels equivalent of The City of London or Wall Street, in N.Y. While on the main trading floor after the Bourse had closed for the day, he spied a huge wall mural depicting North America of 100 years ago. Not too many names were printed, or rather painted, into the design, but one which caught his eye was St. Andrews. "Which goes to show," said Mr. Holland, "that St. Andrews of 100 years ago was a centre of communication for commerce between Europe and North America. Names of shipping companies, long since legendary, once used the port of St. Andrews at time when few of our larger, better-known cities were known in world trade and commerce. "It made my trip complete," he added, employing an old quotation to round out his remarks.

Shiretown Items: 50 years ago and now. Updating of 1888/1898 poem (Rose mistakenly believes the 1898 section was written in 1898).

            1938

            Again the wintry sun goes down

            Behind the Devil's Head;

            And now Herb Greenlaw rings the bell

            To show the day is dead;

            The talk of "booms" now ne'er is heard

            On the streets about the town,

            But only of the tourist trade

            That rains the money down.

            A concrete pavement now is seen

            Where once the cows did roam;

            Electric lights adorn the streets

            And decorate the dome,

            The "talkies" entertain us now

            In 1938;

            We turn the tap and fill our glass

            And drink from Chamcook lake!

            (this section seems actually to have been written in 1938)

            1965

            Now it's nearly our Centenary,

            Another 50 years.

            The Company's still forming fast,

            With ecstasy and tears.

            Donald Munro now rings the bell

            In winter and in summer;

            While summer guests brighten our streets

            In one way and another.

            The fathers of St. Andrews town

            Again listen to speeches

            Because it all is sure to boom,

            With two new parks, and beaches.

            The prophecy of '88

            Brings many folk for sleeping;

            For cooking out at that same point,

            Their tents and trailers keeping.

            There's been a dreadful dry spell.

            Chamcook Lake is very low.

            We've been using too much water.

            Now the CPR says "No!"

            There are no cows near us at all,

            Town horses are no more;

            But dogs still bark about the streets,

            With that—we'll close the door.
