No Park for Minister's Until Province Owns all
No firm plans will be made about the future of Minister's Island until the province owns all of the land on the island, according to spokesman with Historical Resources.
This summer, some work is being carried out on the island, just off St. Andrews, which the province bought in 1977, and there has been some local speculation that it was the beginning of renovation work on the main building to get ready for opening the site as a park.
However, according to David Myles of Historical Resources, the work "is just maintenance to keep the place from falling down . . . just to hold our own." . . . Myles said recently that a massive program would be needed to refurbish the existing building so the public could view them. He said such a project would require federal funds and he added that no work would be done until the province has title to the entire island.
When the province purchased most of the island in 1977, several lots reMained in private hands and those lots included right to the road access to the island. Myles confirmed that the province is still negotiating for those privately held lots. The work being done on the island this summer included repairing a porch on the gardener's cottage, doing work on dormers on the barn, and repairing a chimney and scraping and painting some buildings.
Myles said that between $20,000 and $25,000 is being spent on the "maintenance work." Two local students are doing the work under a summer works program, according to Myles.

Walker's Film Demystifies the Irving family. Giles Walker, "I Like to See the Wheels Turn." NFB. "Walker describes Irving as a shy man who believes people should mind their own business; a man who believes strongly in himself and the righteousness of what he does. His brains, remarkable attention to detail and incredible capacity to work are his hallmarks. Irving believes that growth is what life is all about and that if can be cultivated, nurtured and when necessary, forced." Review by Ann Breault.
