St. Andrews by the Year

Click on a link to get a very highly selective account of what was going on in St. Andrews and area in a given year drawn mostly from local newspapers. From 1833 onwards we have an unbroken journalistic record of local events, but before that almost a complete blank - a few copies of the St. Andrews Herald from 1820 to 1826 and a fragment of the St. Andrews Courant from 1831. My impetus in the beginning was the development of tourism, as I was working on my history of the Algonquin Hotel at the time, but I saw this venture as convenient excuse to learn as much as possible about St. Andrews at street level - its politics, people, culture, interests. My "Historical Scrapbook," which I brought out in 2008, is a condensation of this information in a kind of tribute to local journalism. Here you have all my notes, with some information outside of the news thrown in. - Ed."
